work

How To: Chanel Couture Gowns. Yeah, how to.

Ever wondered or imagined how much work is involved in the making of one single couture dress?

Ever asked yourself why can’t anyone call their designs “couture” even if they worked really hard on it and it’s really beautiful?

Here is why. This is the real thing, people. Enjoy this inspiring little video by Chanel Couture:

That’s perfection. So inspiring!

Tel Aviv Fashion Week, a set on Flickr.

If you plan to go through my way too many photos here, taken last week during Tel Aviv fashion week, I should say a few words about it before you click on this link. For what it’s worth, I made a mistake. I should have taken a lot more photos of my friends and colleagues at the press room rather than blurry runway shots. And it’s not the quality of my photos that bothers me (that too, but it’s not my point) but the story of the Tel Aviv fashion scene that you don’t get to see here, at all. There are over a 100 photos here, taken during each show, and I had to attend them all. Most of them were taken for Haaretz newspaper’s website, to which I reported on an hourly basis during this event.

This is the time to tell you that I don’t think that what you are about to see here is about Tel-Avivian fashion or at least does not present the way I or my friends dress or wish to dress, if at all. I will also tell you that I truly loved 3 shows this week. One of them even brought tears to my eyes, and another one made me purchase a dress straight off the runway. But that is it. The gap between the amazing production and venue, done by Motty Reif, and the collections presented, was much too big to overlook. Keyword for next time: editing, editing, editing. I should have taken more photos of my friends, simply because they dress up ten times better than what we saw on the runways. As simple as that.

And last words: I had so much fun. It’s hard work, long hours and a lot of stress, and still, so much fun!

December, really?

It’s funny how I’ve been waiting for this month to start for quite a while now and now that it has, I’m pretty shocked that this year is coming to its end.
Big changes are coming my way and it’s way too soon to write about them here, but I can only say that I can’t wait for 2013 to finally start. I couldn’t be more ready for it.
This week has been quite eventful with collections previews, meetings, dinners with friends and, yeah, work. I started feeling my traveling need biting me a little bit too. Although I miss my friends in NY very much, and the city of course, I really want to go to Paris. I feel like I haven’t been there for too long, since March I think? I really miss it.
Here is the passing week in photos. You can find more in my Instagram at @HillaO.

I grabbed a couple of Noritamy rings and pilled them up on one finger. Here is the gorgeous result, I can’t have enough of those. You can check their amazing designs here at Nortiamy website:

This one was taken at one of my favorite places to eat in Tel Aviv, Hotel Montifiore. I think I eat there about 3-4 times a week now, I love it! These are a couple of deserts we shared, it was amazing!

And yeah I was so happy when Grace Coddington’s new memoir came in with a messenger at my place, I’ve been so curious to read it since I read about it. It’s here and it’s much thicker than I thought it would be:

What can I say, elevators can be boring. My accountant’s office is on the 34th floor, I had to goof around while I was on my way up:

I went to Maya Negri’s collection preview this week at the new boutique hotel in TLV, Brown Hotel. The lobby is beautiful, I loved the huge bookshelf, it’s amazing. Here’s me with Maya and her winter collection’s face-of.

The famous bookshelf –

One of the best things that happened to me was this – lunch with a very good friend, Shelly Gross. I’ve said it here before but I am never too lazy to say it again – besides countless great virtues Shelly has, she also writes the best fashion blog (written in Hebrew) in Israel. Hands down. It’s my favorite. If you read Hebrew, check it out here. Our time together is priceless and means so much to me. She is the best!

She took this photo of me at the restaurant. I regramed from her Instagram straight into mine, I loved it :)

Till next time,

The week that has been

They say that November was energetically evil and brutal to all. It is December 1st, and I saw a beautiful full moon last night.
To add just a couple more cliches to it, I would say that good things happen to those who wait, and also that no dream will ever come true if you don’t work for it. Very hard too.

Thursday to Thusday: my week

It’s been a really intense week, but also very exciting. We are finally starting to work on the next fashion conference here in Israel, which will be the second, and there is so much to so and plan! I can only tell you this for now – it’s going to be so amazing! We set down to work on the schedule this week. I was early at the producer’s office:

The meeting went really well, and after stressing out over the list of things we need to do, I started to get really excited too. I hopped on another cab and rushed to the office, not before I got some coffee.

As you can see, I’ve been really tired lately. My face can’t lie! It’s all there. The day after ended with a really cool event I will write about a bit later, presenting spring/summer 2012 makeup trends by MAC Cosmetics. When it ended, I was waiting for the car to come and take me home, and I saw these great sandals. I think they are Louboutins but not sure.

20120315-220614.jpg

It was really hard to take good photos at the makeup event, as I was sitting in the back (being late has its price. always!) and the screens are not very photogenic. But I did love the colors and shades, and the hair! Oh my it was a neon party all around.

20120315-220635.jpg

I was home by 10pm. Really long day! The morning after started even earlier, with a press preview for Mango spring/summer 2012, which I blogged about here. It was really nice, actually. I will always have love towards Mango, I basically grew up inside their sweaters in the 90s. I got this straw bag from the new collection:

My Saturday was the most perfect day ever. I went outside of the city, all the way in the nature with friends. It was a gorgeous sunny day. We had a nice fire outside, great food and lots of laughs. I even found a local dog to play with, she was so friendly and spoiled, a true hugger.

Two more days of work and off to the weekend. This is me in the car on the way to the office.

Top is by Zara, sunglasses are Botega Venetta, lipgloss is Chanel.

After a long day at the office, I was heading to see Manaolo Blahnik’s new collection at 7:30pm. It was beautiful! Very colorful, fun and very feminine. No brutal wedges, just gentle stilettos. Beautiful.

20120315-220916.jpg

And that was  wrap! Grabbed another green tea on my way back home and went through my Flipboard while stuck in traffic. I found an amazing shot of Patti Smith, I just had to have it:

And… that’s a wrap, all ready to start the weekend! I was so exhausted by the last day of the work week, I just had to wear something super cosy and warm. I chose Maya Negri’s coat-dress in light Beige. It’s made of the softest fabric I’ve ever touched, it’s like your softest favorite sweatshirt, just very elegant and chic. Sunglasses are Botega Venetta. Have a great weekend!

My day in fashion – pics

While waiting for my cab to pick me up to a fashion preview, I took these:

The beautiful tree below my window

The window of my favorite vintage gallery:

Gallerie Parisienne window

The sidewalk. A typical Tel Avivian sidewalk:

At the fashion preview, I couldn’t help myself and took some feet pictures, mostly of the shoes my colleagues were wearing, and of the beautiful poster on the wall, and my favorite sweater from that collection, by Yossi Katzav:

There is only one designer in Israel who is really close to designing couture. That is Mira Zwillinger. I attended her fashion show, which took place at her beautiful house. Check out her new collection here, I tried to take shots of all of it.

Shenkar Fashion Department Graduation 2011

Yesterday was the annual fashion show of the Shenkar graduates. It is always a very exciting and emotional event, for everyone who attend it, I think. The excitement of the students who get to present their designs is simply out there, filling the air with it.

I love young designers.Very much. It’s always so great to see their work coming from the purest sides of design, creativeness and art. They still haven’t faced the demand to also make it commercial, if they wish to survive as designers. That stage of pureness is short and beautiful, and I enjoy the beauty of it as a journalist, as long as it lasts :-)

25 out of 50 graduates presented their work last night. I chose to bring the works of all 50 of them here, as I can only imagine how hard it was to study and work there for the last 4 years, and I think they all deserve to be presented, even if it’s only here, on my blog :-) Here they are:

The winner of this year’s internship with Diane von Fuerstenberg is the only student I posted 2 pics of his work – Marc Goldberg. His work is simply incredible! You can see the names of the students by pointing on the pic with your mouse :) I loved Gal Shenfeld, Israel Ohayon and Marc’s work more than everyone else, though I have to admit it that they all did a wonderful job and the work of everyone is fascinating, innovating and gorgeous!
